Akhtar Hilal Zuberi is a Karachi based artist and art educator. He graduated from National College of Arts, Lahore in 1965 and then moved overseas to Libya where he taught at the Benghazi University from 1975 to 1985. On his return to Pakistan, he established Fixon School of Arts and Creative Techniques popularly known as FACTS for students wishing to pursue creative dreams and guidance towards their career choices in the art field.
Zuberi’s canvas is woven fabric; instead of using a brush, he shreds, plucks, snips, and fluffs the cloth to create his compositions. The display of paintings, true to tradition, articulates his commitment to abstraction. He started deconstructing as a Modernist long before the younger generation made it popular. He manipulates the warp and weft on a stretcher instead of the traditional easel to generate tapestries rich in tactile and visual qualities as well as compelling visceral content.
His work is an original, autonomous creation focused mostly on the reductive and additive process, which is related to collage and relief work techniques. He works purely instinctively, with no previous ideas or preliminary sketches to assist him. The language evolves in response to the mood of the occasion.
