Jovita Alvares’ practice revolves around the documentation and re-documentation of everyday life. Her work aims at exploring the urban spaces that she witnesses everyday in Karachi while also delving into their historical contexts.
Alvares was born and is based in Karachi. As valedictorian for the class of 2016, she has received her undergraduate degree in Fine Art with a distinction in her thesis and an overall distinction from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. She has received numerous awards including the Imran Mir Art Prize in 2016. She was a Resident Artist of the 4th Sanat Residency in 2017 and has been a participant of various group shows in London, Karachi, Lahore and Dubai as well as artist talks, as part of the KB ‘17 Discursive.
She held her first solo exhibition, ‘Wallflower’ in culmination to the Imran Mir Art Prize, in 2018. Alvares works as a Designer and Sub-editor for ArtNow Pakistan and regularly contributes to various publications.
